Our Operational Area

Chaupal works in northern belt of Chhattisgarh state of India covering the districts of Surguja, Surajpur, Balrampur, Koriya and Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur (MCB).

Chaupal’s operational area is a predominantly forested and tribal region with persistent development challenges. Many villages are in remote forest areas, limiting access to basic services and government welfare schemes. Awareness and last-mile delivery of entitlements related to land and forest rights, pensions, food security and livelihoods remain uneven, particularly among tribal and PVTG communities.

Women shoulder a disproportionate burden of agricultural work, forest collection and household responsibilities while having limited access to resources and decision-making spaces. The region also faces serious health and nutrition challenges, with high levels of malnutrition among children and widespread anemia among women and adolescent girls. Limited access to quality healthcare, nutritious diets and sanitation further aggravates these vulnerabilities.

Agriculture in the region is largely rain-fed and small-holder-based, making rural livelihoods highly vulnerable to erratic rainfall and changing climate patterns. Limited irrigation, low agricultural productivity, and weak market linkages push many households into seasonal migration for wage labour. Forest produce remains an important source of income, but fluctuating availability and limited value addition constrain its potential.
